County Commissioners

Laura Meier, District 5, was first elected to the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners in 2020. 

Commissioner Meier is a former educator and understands the importance of a quality education. She taught high school social studies at a drop-out prevention program in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. 

Prior to joining the Board, she was a stay-at-home mom and raised her two boys. She has been active in her community by helping to create an after-school program for Sedgefield Middle School students in the Brookhill neighborhood. Meier also worked as a campaign manager and volunteered for numerous campaigns and put her love of photography to good work by publishing photos in Our State and other magazines. 

In 2017, Meier joined the board of Charlotte Women’s March (CWM) and co-chaired its Racial Equity Group. She serves as CWM’s co-president, helping advocate for equity for all women. She also served on the board of Cops and Barbers and has previously served on the board of Lillian’s List. She is also an active member of Avondale Presbyterian Church, where she is an elder and co-leader of stewardship. Laura holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Appalachian State University and a master’s degree from Winthrop University. 

Meier says Mecklenburg County is a thriving community and her goal is to make it even better. Issues she is concerned about include affordable housing, education, health care, and violence. 

"Nothing will change if we don’t address the root cause of many of our problems – poverty due to inequity,” Meier says. 

As a County Commissioner, Meier wants to extend a helping hand to people in need and ensure that all citizens succeed and prosper.
