County Commissioners
Yvette Townsend-Ingram, At Large
Yvette is a native of West Virginia, a coal miner’s daughter and granddaughter, who moved to Charlotte almost 30 years ago to live a better life economically than she was experiencing in West Virginia. Yvette instantly fell in love with Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, moving her entire family to Mecklenburg County.
Yvette states she has always been a servant-leader, combining her education, experience, and business acumen to find solutions to problems encountered by most working-class families. Yvette has used her experience as an educator, writer, and analyst to develop programs and funding for HBCUs like Johnson C Smith University and Livingstone College. Yvette also worked for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for two years. Priorities for Yvette in her first term on the commission include improving communication of county services to residents; diminishing food insecurity; improving wrap-around services to families, especially services for mental wellness; and acceleration of the county’s MWSBE Program.
Yvette serves as the Democratic chair of precinct 89; is a member of the NC SEC (State Executive Committee); and served a term on the Mecklenburg County CRC (Community Relations Committee), appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. During 2022, Yvette was selected as a co-lead/delegate for the Meck Participatory Budgeting project. As a volunteer for this opportunity, she was able to work with other county volunteers in her home District 2 to identify funding for several urgent projects totaling $1 million. Yvette serves on the Social Justice Ministry at her church, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and was selected as a delegate for the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Yvette is a self-described “life-long learner” who loves education. She earned a B.S. degree from HBCU West Virginia State University, an MBA from Strayer University, and completed all but the dissertation (ABD) to obtain a DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) from Walden University. Yvette resides in District 2 of Mecklenburg County with the youngest of her two adult sons.
