County Commissioners

George Dunlap, District 3

Elected by the residents of District 3, George Dunlap is currently serving his 17th consecutive year on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners. During his tenure on the Board, George has served in various leadership positions, including 6 terms as the chairman. 

A retired law enforcement officer (27 years), Marine (13 years), and former Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board member (13 years), George is a lifelong public servant, who has served in various roles on the local and national level in service to his community.

Over the course of his career, George has held several leadership positions and is currently the second vice president of the National Association of County Commissioners, an organization where he previously served in various leadership capacities including as chairman of the Justice and Public Safety Committee. George serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) and the organization’s Health and Human Services Committee. He is a former member of the North Carolina Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission, and currently sits on various boards including the Arts and Science Council, the Board of Directors for Center City Partners, UNC Charlotte, and the University City Partners.

A lifelong resident of Mecklenburg County, George was born and raised in Pineville, NC. He is a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he received his master’s degree in public administration and his Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. Prior to attending UNC Charlotte, George received an associate degree in law enforcement and an associate degree in correctional science from Central Piedmont Community College.

Devoted to his faith, George attends Saint Paul Baptist Church, where he has served on the board of directors for 20 years, holding the position of chairman for 7 of those years. He holds the title of Deacon Emeritus and is a member of the hymn choir and visitor’s ministry.

Throughout his career, George has been the recipient of numerous awards including a Telly Award and the Central Piedmont Community College’s Richard H. Hagemeyer Award (which is the highest honor given to graduates of Central Piedmont Community College).
